 3. Questions, 01 October – 14 October 2012

Week 2-3

Each class formulates a question on their Learning Circle theme according to criteria for quality research sponsored question.

LC 1: The Bishop Strachan School, Question:

As many of you have highlighted in your comments, Toronto is a very diverse city.  In our class we began a conversation about diversity.  We talked respectfully with one another about how important it is to ask questions about peoples's experiences so that we truly understand from a place of listening and respect and not from assumptions. In our studies, we have begun a conversation about really investigating whether or not humanity can be united beyond our diversity.  Here are some questions we would like you to consider from your experiences in your school and in your country.

1. As a class, can you share with us how you understand diversity?  Use examples from you school, city/town or your country to illustrate diversity for us.

2. How do you, or others in your communities find the courage to challenge social norms or behaviours that do not respect diversity?

3. How does you country respect and protect the diversity with in it? Please offer specific examples.  (For example, in Canada we have the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, that is embedded in the Constitution of our country and is the highest law of the land)  http://www.efc.ca/pages/law/charter/charter.text.html

4. Would it be more effective to leave the protection of the planet's diversity to individual governments (national level) or to empower international bodies such as the UN to ensure that right?

LC 2: iEARN Taiwan, combined classes, Question:

photo from http://evaluation.umn.edu/home/evaluation-job-board

iEARN Taiwan team has members from three senior high schools located in Kaohsiung. After a series of discussion, we come to an conclusion that we are all interested in education issues.   Furthermore, we begin to focus on the definition of a decent and successful job.  Such job as medical doctors, professors, business CEO are mostly regarded as decent and successful job holders.  However, our team members really don't think the ways we learn now in school can actually help us get a decent and successful job when grown up.  Therefore, we would like to know if there is any difference among us in different cultures.

**Our main question is: In your country, what is  a successful and decent job from the view point of the general? There must be a good number of jobs, but please just mention the top 5, and  further tell us the reasons.

Our sub-questions are as follows:

1.  To be well-qualified for the decent job, how do students receive such the professional skill

training in school? What are they? Please suggest 5 professional skills that students do need.

2.  Please evaluate if your education system do help students gain the professional skills at a proper

age.  Please illustrate your points by some examples.

3.  What kind of extra-curriculum activities do you think are beneficial to students'  professional skill

development ?  Do your parents or teachers support your joining such extra-curriculum learning?

     Why or why not?

LC 3: Colegiul Economic Buzau, Question:

We would like you to make a short reasearch among your collegues to discover what they think we have in common and what we have different. After this please answer to our questions:

What makes us the same?

3 things (also can be traditions, values, emotions)  you think you  have in common with other countries/ nations

What makes you special?

3 things (also can be traditions, values, emotions) that you think you  have different from other countries/ nations

Please, post also photos that ilustrate these 6 things you choosed.

LC 4: National College "B.P.Hasdeu"Name of school, Question:

Draft numero uno:

Europe is a synthesis formed as a result of great diversity. Imagine a country with no diversity. How important do you think its role is in maintaining intercultural relationships and social complexity? We think that diversity implies tolerance, whether this diversity is ethnic, religious or cultural.Diversity is that which makes us live in a sophisticated community, learn from each other and live together in peace.

The ethnical and cultural diversity of each country is what makes it unique. Each region can be a leap in time, its inhabitants telling the story of centuries. Are there any such regions in your country where the customs have been kept and respected to this day? Here are some examples from our country:

1.       Maramures, N Romaniei.; Here, people wear the traditional costume every day

LC 5: Kirovograd Collegium, Question:

People often say here in Ukraine: "Never talk communicating with others about religion and politics as these two topics can be the source of misunderstanding". What is your attitude to these words; do you agree or diagree? Give your reasons.  What can be done to unite people in spite of these differences? What can be done to avoid conficts on religious basis or on the basis of different political beliefs ? What is being done in your country?

Regards to Taiwan's team!
If possible, we would appreciate it, if you could also post a version of your question[s] in English, as internet translators do not offer us an accurate translation of your message.
Thank you.
